What is a Roller Conveyor?
A roller conveyor is a series of rollers that are supported within a frame where objects can be moved around without the need for human aid. Usually these rollers are made out of mild steel, galvanized plastic or stainless steel, depending on what would work best for your workplace and your budget. This is different from a belt conveyor, which has a single smooth belt running from one place to another.
With a roller conveyor, each roll moves the object to the next one by gently spinning around. These roller conveyor systems can either be made manually, by gravity, or because they have been powered by a mechanical system. All of these can be really useful in a factory setting, especially to transport boxes, cardboard boxes, crates, pallets, plastic totes, bags and even trays.
They are actually incredibly practical and adaptable to suit the needs of most factories. Roller conveyor systems can even be used in conjunction with ancillary equipment such as bends, gates, and turntables.
Some History Behind Roller Conveyors
The roller conveyor system is actually a very common system that has been used for many years. The first patent dates back to 1908, but it was really Henry Ford who made them what they are today when he began to use them in his factories in 1913. Ford’s creation of the assembly line was the first attempt to create an automated factory and it has become a model that many people still follow today.
Since then the roller conveyor has been used to transport all sorts of goods long distances, which is particularly helpful when you’re carrying heavy or large loads. This means that your employees are not having to do the heavy lifting which is both a safety risk and a time consuming task. As the twentieth century progressed these two benefits really sealed the roller conveyor’s place in factory automation, and it is still something that is important today.
Even though we now have the option to use a machine driven roller conveyor, the basic principles, and the benefits of using them still remain the same.
