Accumulation
Accumulation in Conveyor Systems
Accumulation refers to the process of gathering or holding products on a conveyor at a specific point, such as boxes, plastic totes, FMCG goods, bottles, or cans. This occurs when products move along the conveyor belt and are stopped by a fixed point, such as an end stop or a retractable blade stop. Accumulation is crucial for managing workflow in various industries, providing a buffer for products during machine maintenance, label changes, or manual workstations.

- Beer Cans and Bottles in Breweries: Accumulation buffers products before bottling or packaging.
- Live Buffering During Maintenance: Keeps the line flowing smoothly during machine maintenance or operational pauses.
- Robot Cell Palletising: Gathers products for automated palletisation, ensuring smooth product handling.
- Manual Workstations: Accumulation points enable operators to work on products while the conveyor system manages the flow.
Why Proper Accumulation is Important
Accumulators are essential in preventing product jams, ensuring efficient workflow, and maintaining product integrity. An improperly designed accumulator can lead to overloading, system breakdowns, and increased wear on conveyor components. Key Considerations for Accumulation Conveyors
- Max Weight of Accumulation: The total weight of the products on the conveyor is a critical factor. This weight is calculated by multiplying the weight of each product by the total number of products. The result is always expressed in kilograms (kg).
- Belt Tension: The type of belt used in the accumulation conveyor must be carefully selected based on the total allowable belt tension. Choosing the wrong belt can cause premature wear, leading to breakdowns and costly downtime.
- Motor Torque: The motor’s rated torque must be sufficient to handle the weight of the accumulated products. If the weight exceeds the motor’s capacity, it increases friction between the belt and the wear strip, requiring higher torque to keep the conveyor running smoothly.
