Electric actuators and motion systems explained

What an electric actuator does

An electric actuator packages a motor, a drive mechanism and a controller into one assembly that moves a load to a position and holds it there. Buying the movement as a unit rather than assembling a motor, coupling, screw and bearing yourself removes most of the mechanical design work, and removes the tolerance stack that usually comes with it.

The range covers stepper, brushless DC and servo motors, linear slides and actuators, and rotary stages, so the same catalogue answers a short indexing move, a long linear stroke and a continuous drive. What differs between them is how the position is held and how the speed is regulated.

Stepper, BLDC or servo

Steppers give the best positioning accuracy and holding torque. Brushless DC is the efficient, stable choice where something runs continuously at a set speed. Servo handles high dynamics and sharply varying loads. Settling which of the three an axis needs is the decision that constrains everything after it, so it is worth making before any sizing work starts.

Absolute positioning with the AZ series

AZ series technology holds an absolute position reference without a backup battery. A machine can start from a known position instead of running a homing routine, which removes dead time at every start-up and lets an axis recover its position after a power interruption rather than needing to be re-referenced.

Linear actuators: ballscrew or belt

Linear units integrate the motor with either a ballscrew or a belt. Accuracy is set by which of those you choose and by the length of travel, so positional repeatability and mechanical backlash are matched to the requirement at selection rather than assumed. Ballscrew suits shorter, more precise strokes; belt suits longer travel where speed matters more than the last fraction of a millimetre.

Control and integration

Drivers accept pulse and direction, analogue speed signals, and binary I/O for start, stop and direction, with fieldbus including Modbus on some models. That range is what makes these straightforward to hang off an existing PLC, and the interface should be confirmed against the controller you already have rather than after delivery.

Gearheads, brakes and encoders

Matched gearheads raise torque and resolution while keeping the package compact. Holding brakes are available where an axis is vertical or has to stay put on a safety stop. Encoders and absolute sensors are offered across many of the families where the machine has to report actual position rather than assume it.

Duty cycle and continuous running

Brushless DC and many geared builds are suited to continuous operation. Stepper-based axes need their thermal capacity confirmed against the duty cycle, which is part of sizing rather than an afterthought. Robust bearings and long-life design keep maintenance low, and most applications need no routine calibration.

Where actuators sit in a machine

An actuator is specified from the load, not from the catalogue. Torque, inertia, lead, speed and duty all have to be calculated before a motor, gear ratio and driver can be recommended, and the driver has to match your panel standard and available mains. Where the requirement is rotation at a controlled speed rather than a stroke, brushless DC motors cover it, and stepper motors are the answer where a shaft simply has to stop in a defined place.
