Fish Processing Conveyors

Fish processing is one of the hardest environments a conveyor works in: wet, cold, salt-laden, carrying product that is soft and marks easily, alongside waste that has to be taken away constantly — in a plant that gets stripped and washed every week. Two-Tier Fillet and Offal Line, Co. Cork

A fish processor in Co. Cork needed a line that could handle filleting and waste removal at the same time, without the two crossing. We built a two-tier stainless steel system and delivered it in nine weeks.

The top tier carries fillets past operator workstations for cutting and boning. The bottom tier runs directly underneath and takes offal away, fed by waste chutes at each workstation so waste leaves the bench the moment it is cut. The workstations are height-adjustable and carry tool shelves. Both lines run at variable speed between 5 and 15 metres per minute, with the top line carrying up to 50kg and the bottom line 30kg. The whole system comes apart quickly for the weekly tear-down and wash.

What the Line Delivers

Designing for the Weekly Wash

In fish processing, the cleaning regime shapes the conveyor more than the product does. A line that cannot be stripped quickly either does not get cleaned properly, or it costs hours of production every week to do it.

That is why the Cork system was built to come apart for a weekly tear-down. It affects almost everything about the build: how sections are joined, where fasteners sit, whether there are enclosed sections that can trap water, and how the frame drains when it is hosed. It is far cheaper to design in than to retrofit, because it is a decision about how the conveyor is constructed rather than which components go on it.

Common Questions

Can one system handle product and waste together? Yes, and keeping them apart is usually the point. The Cork line runs two tiers: fillets along the top past the workstations, offal along the bottom directly underneath, with chutes taking waste off the bench as it is cut.

How fast do the lines run? That build runs at a variable 5 to 15 metres per minute so the speed can be matched to what is being processed. The right range depends on your product and how many operators are on the line.

How much weight can they carry? On the Cork system, up to 50kg on the top line and 30kg on the bottom. Loadings are set from the product and the run length rather than being fixed.

Can the conveyor be stripped down for cleaning? Yes. That line was designed for a weekly tear-down and wash, which is a construction decision taken at design stage rather than something that can be added later.

How long does a line like this take? The Cork system was delivered in nine weeks. Timescale depends on the scope and on what has to be tied into existing equipment, so it is worth asking early rather than assuming.
