Gravity roller conveyors are the simplest and most cost effective way to move cartons, totes and trays across a factory or warehouse. With no motors, drives or controls, product is either pushed by hand along a level bed or allowed to run under its own weight down a gentle decline. LVP Automation supplies gravity sections and light duty conveyors for goods in, packing benches, order assembly and despatch areas throughout Ireland.
Because there is nothing to power, gravity conveyor is quiet, needs almost no maintenance and can be repositioned as a layout changes. Straight sections, curves, ball transfer tables and roller gates can be combined to build an entire manual handling route, and the same components are often used as the free running parts of a larger automated line. The main design decisions are roller pitch, roller diameter and frame width. At least three rollers should sit under the shortest product so it never stalls, and the frame has to be sized to the heaviest load.
Gravity works well until flow has to be controlled, sequenced or accumulated without pressure between packs, at which point powered roller conveyors take over. Many of our customers run a hybrid layout, using gravity where an operator is present and driven sections where the line has to buffer or release product automatically.
