Oriental Motor Applications

Most of what a conveyor does well or badly comes back to the motor and how it is controlled. LVP Automation has standardised on Oriental Motor drives across much of our own equipment, and we specify, programme and commission them for customers as well as fitting them.

The two below are the ones we use most: the closed-loop AZ stepper where position accuracy is the requirement, and the BMU brushless DC where speed range and energy consumption matter. Choosing between them is part of motor sizing and selection, and the control side sits with PLC programming. Motors are also available through our motors range. We are based in Finglas, Dublin 11 and work with manufacturers across Ireland.

Oriental Motor Programming and Control

Stepper motors have a reputation for losing position under load. The closed-loop AZ series answers that with an 18-bit absolute encoder, so the motor knows where it actually is rather than assuming, and holds position to better than 3 arc minutes.

We supplied and programmed one for a customer running a light optic testing device: payloads up to 5kg, moving 250mm in 0.4 seconds. The driver has the controller built into it, so it integrates without a separate control unit, and positions are set in MEX02, which Oriental Motor make available as a free download. That combination is what makes commissioning quicker than a conventional stepper setup, where the control hardware and the tuning are separate jobs.

Brushless DC Motor Solutions

On our Belcon Mini conveyors we standardised on the BMU brushless DC design rather than a conventional induction motor. The reason is range: a single gearbox covers 0 to 60 metres per minute, where induction motors would need several variants to do the same job.

That has a knock-on effect on stock and on cost, because fewer items have to be held to cover the same set of applications. The BMU also uses 30 to 35% less energy than a similar-sized induction motor, which on a line running long hours shows up on the bill rather than just on the datasheet. The package is physically smaller as well, which helps where the drive end is tight.

Common Questions

Stepper or brushless DC — which do we need? It depends what you are asking the motor to do. If the requirement is holding or repeating an exact position, the closed-loop AZ stepper is the answer. If it is driving a conveyor across a range of speeds, the BMU brushless DC is usually the better fit. Getting that decision right is what motor sizing and selection is for.

Don’t stepper motors lose position? Open-loop ones can. The AZ series is closed loop with an 18-bit absolute encoder, so it knows its actual position rather than counting steps and hoping, which removes the usual objection to steppers.

How accurate is it? Better than 3 arc minutes on the AZ. Whether that is more accuracy than you need is worth asking, because precision costs money and is rarely free to maintain.

Do we need a separate controller? Not with the built-in controller type driver, which is one of the reasons setup is faster. Positions are programmed in MEX02, available free from Oriental Motor.

Will a brushless DC motor really save energy? The BMU uses 30 to 35% less than a comparable induction motor. Whether that matters depends on how many hours your line runs — on a single shift it is marginal, on continuous running it is not.

Can you programme motors on equipment we already have? Yes. We specify, programme and commission drives on our own equipment and on machinery from other suppliers.
