Vertical Form Fill and Seal (VFFS) Machines

LVP Automation offers advanced Vertical Form Fill and Seal (VFFS) machines designed to provide fast, efficient packaging for a wide range of products, including food, pharmaceuticals, and other granular or powdered items. These VFFS systems form and seal bags directly from rollstock film, preserving product freshness, quality, and storage efficiency. Ideal for high-speed, large-scale production, LVP’s VFFS machines are versatile and can handle diverse bag styles and sizes.

Vertical form fill seal explained

The machine is the easy part, the dosing is not

A VFFS machine forms the bag from a roll of film, fills it and seals it. What decides whether the line actually works is the dosing system sitting above it. Multihead weighers suit snacks and particulates, auger fillers suit powders, and volumetric or cup fillers suit uniform pieces. Specify the doser against your product first, because a fast bagger fed by the wrong filler is a slow line with a good machine in it.

01

Continuous or intermittent motion

An intermittent machine indexes the film, stops it, then seals. A continuous machine seals on the move with the jaws travelling alongside the film. Continuous is faster and smoother on the film, intermittent is simpler and gives the product a moment to settle in the bag before the seal closes. Product behaviour usually decides this more than the target rate does, particularly with anything that aerates or bounces.

02

How fast, honestly

Rate depends on the product, the bag size and the film, so any single number is a half truth. As a working guide, snack lines often run beyond 80 to 120 bags a minute, while powders typically run lower because dust control and dosing accuracy set the pace rather than the bagger. Size the line on your slowest realistic product and bag size, not the one that demonstrates best.

03

Bag styles and the retail features that go with them

Pillow, gusseted and block bottom cover most requirements, and each changes how the pack stands and stacks on shelf. On top of the style, options include zippers, tear notches, euro-holes and carry handles. These are worth deciding before you specify, because a resealable zipper or a hanging hole is a machine capability rather than a print change, and adding one afterwards is a different conversation.

04

Film is where the sustainability decision lands

Laminates, mono-materials where suitable, PE, PP, paper laminate options and recyclable films are all workable, subject to the seal window and the product. Mono-material is usually the move that improves recyclability, but it narrows the sealing window, so it has to be trialled with your actual product rather than assumed. Bring the film specification into the machine conversation instead of settling it afterwards with your film supplier.

05

Gas flush and shelf life

Modified atmosphere packaging is available for oxygen sensitive foods and buys shelf life without changing the recipe. It is only as good as the seal, so seal strength has to be validated with your film and your product rather than in principle. If shelf life is part of the commercial case for the line, put the MAP validation in the acceptance tests rather than leaving it to be discovered in a trial run.

06

Changeovers, coding and hygiene

Recipe selection sets sealing temperatures, timings and jaw pressure, and the forming set and film roll are designed for quick swaps, which is what keeps a multi SKU line moving. Date, lot and batch coding integrates inline with thermal inkjet, continuous inkjet or thermal transfer overprinting, and machine vision can verify print presence and legibility. Stainless frames, smooth surfaces, dust extraction for powders and guarded access suit food and pharma GMP environments.

Where it sits in the line

VFFS is a primary packaging step, so it sits alongside tray sealing and thermoforming depending on the pack. Downstream it hands off through PLC and HMI handshakes to checkweighers, metal detection, x-ray, end of line machines and palletising, with data links for traceability to MES or WMS. All of it can be specified as one complete packaging line. LVP Automation specifies, installs and supports VFFS machines from Finglas, Dublin 11 as part of our wider automation services.

Where VFFS Machines Excel

Speed & Throughput

Continuous or intermittent motion with matched dosing keeps lines running fast while maintaining consistent seal integrity.

Flexible Formats

Switch quickly between pillow, gusseted and block-bottom bags; add zippers or punch options to meet retail and bulk needs.

Clean Integration

Interfaces cleanly with weighers, augers, cup fillers, printers/label applicators, checkweighers and case packers for end-to-end efficiency.

FAQs about Vertical Form Fill and Seal

Quick answers on products, films, speeds, options, hygiene and integration for VFFS packaging.

What products can a VFFS machine handle?

Powders (e.g., flour, protein), granulates (rice, coffee), snacks, sweets, hardware and small components, paired with the right dosing system.

Which dosing systems are compatible?

Multihead weighers for snacks and particulates, auger fillers for powders, and volumetric/cup fillers for uniform pieces.

What bag styles are available?

Pillow, gusseted and block-bottom bags; options for zippers, tear notches, euro-holes and carry handles.

How fast can it run?

Depends on product, bag size and film, snack lines often exceed 80–120 bpm; powders typically run lower due to dust control and dosing.

What film types are supported?

Laminates, mono-materials (where suitable), PE, PP, paper-laminate options and recyclable films, subject to seal window and product.

Do you offer gas flush/MAP?

Yes, MAP options extend shelf life for oxygen-sensitive foods; we validate seal strength with your film and product.

How easy are changeovers?

Recipe selection sets temperatures, timings and jaw pressure; forming set and film roll swaps are designed for quick change.

Can we print date/lot/batch codes inline?

Yes, TIJ/CIJ printers or thermal transfer overprinters (TTO) integrate easily; vision can verify print presence/legibility.

What hygiene features are available?

Stainless frames, smooth surfaces, dust extraction for powders and guarded access, suited to food/pharma GMP environments.

How does a VFFS line integrate with downstream equipment?

PLC/HMI handshakes to checkweighers, metal detectors, x-ray, case packers and palletisers; data links for traceability to MES/WMS.
