Most lines are made of standard equipment, and that is usually the right answer. A bespoke build earns its place at the points where nothing off the shelf fits: an awkward product that no standard handler will present squarely, a transfer between two machines that were never designed to meet, a manual station that has become the bottleneck, or a footprint that a catalogue machine simply will not fit into. The work starts with understanding the process rather than choosing a machine.
Every project starts with a detailed consultation to understand your workflow and what the machine actually has to achieve, because the requirement is rarely what was written in the first email. From there it goes through design and engineering, manufacture, installation and commissioning, with the same team carrying it end to end. Software integration and control systems are part of that scope, not a separate job handed to someone else afterwards.
A custom machine is only as good as its handshake with everything around it. PLC control, operator interface, sensors and the signals passed to and from upstream and downstream equipment are designed with the machine rather than bolted on at the end. That is what decides whether the machine runs as part of the line or sits as an island that somebody has to babysit.
Where the job is repetitive placement, loading or sortation, a robot cell is often the cleaner answer than a purpose-built mechanism. Pick and place systems handle high rate product placement, and warehouse robotics cover the storage and retrieval end. The choice between a robot and a dedicated mechanism comes down to rate, product variety and how often the job is going to change.
Adding automation to a line that is already running is a different problem to building on a clear floor. Belt heights, speeds, control voltages and the available shutdown window all constrain what can be done, and the machine has to be designed around them. Solutions are built to be adaptable, so a system can be expanded or modified as the operation changes rather than replaced.
Guarding, e-stops and interlocks are designed around the moving parts and the access points on a risk basis, and they are part of the design from the start rather than a panel added once the machine works. Getting this right early is usually cheaper than retrofitting guarding onto a machine that was laid out without it.
The useful starting point is the product and the process: what is being handled, in what sizes and weights, at what rate, what happens immediately before and after, the space available, and whether the line can stop for installation. Photos or a video of the current process are worth more than a written description.
