An indexing conveyor moves product in measured steps rather than a continuous flow. It advances, stops, holds the product still while something happens to it, then advances again. That pause is the whole point: it gives a camera, a label applicator, a filling head, a robot or an operator a stationary target to work on.

What is an Indexing Conveyor?

An indexing conveyor advances product a set distance, stops, and holds it there while an operation is carried out, then repeats. The distance travelled is the index; the pause is the dwell. Both are set in the control system, and both can be changed without rebuilding the conveyor.

Continuous conveyors are judged on throughput. Indexing conveyors are judged on repeatability — whether the product lands in the same place every cycle, closely enough for whatever is working on it. That is why they turn up wherever a machine or a person needs the product to hold still: inspection, labelling, filling, capping, assembly and robot pick and place.

Indexing or Continuous Movement?

Not every line needs to index. If nothing is acting on the product while it moves, continuous running is simpler, gentler on the product and usually cheaper to build and maintain. Indexing earns the extra control when an operation needs the product stationary and in a known position.

The trade-off is throughput. Every cycle costs an acceleration, a dwell and a deceleration, so the slowest station sets the pace for the whole indexing section. Where that operation is slow, the usual answer is to buffer product either side of it so the rest of the line keeps moving — see accumulation.

Product stability matters as much as speed. Tall, light or top-heavy items can rock or tip under the acceleration and braking an index requires, which pushes the design towards gentler ramps, a different belt surface, or guides and pucks to hold the product in place.

Key Considerations for Indexing Conveyors

Three things decide whether an indexing conveyor holds its position in service: how the motion is driven, how position is fed back to the controller, and how the product behaves during the stop. Get those right and the index repeats. Get them wrong and small errors accumulate cycle after cycle until product is out of position.

What is an indexing conveyor? A conveyor that moves product in fixed steps with a pause between them, rather than running continuously. The pause holds the product still so a machine or an operator can work on it.

What is the difference between indexing and accumulation? Indexing controls how product moves — a set distance, then a stop. Accumulation controls how product waits, gathering it at a point so the line either side keeps running. Many lines use both, in different places.

How accurate can the index be? That depends on the drive, the position feedback and the product itself. A servo drive with encoder feedback holds position far more tightly than a fixed-speed motor on a timer, but a product that slides or rocks on the belt will limit accuracy whatever the drive is capable of.

Can an existing conveyor be converted to index? Sometimes. It depends on the drive and gearbox already fitted, whether there is room to add position feedback, and whether the frame and belt can take repeated acceleration and braking. It is worth assessing the existing conveyor before assuming either way.

What controls the indexing? A PLC running the sequence, taking signals from sensors and the drive and deciding when to move and when to hold. Most of the flexibility sits in that logic, so changes to index length or dwell time are usually a programming change rather than a mechanical one.

Does indexing slow the line down? Compared with continuous running at the same belt speed, yes — each cycle costs acceleration, dwell and deceleration. Whether that matters depends on how fast the operation at the station is, since that is usually what sets the pace anyway.
