Pallet wrappers explained

What a pallet wrapper is doing

Stretch film holds a load together by pulling against itself. The machine's job is to apply that film at a consistent tension, in a consistent pattern, on every pallet, so the load arrives as it left. Hand wrapping cannot do that reliably: tension varies with whoever is doing it, film use varies with it, and the loads that fail in transit are usually the ones that were wrapped last thing on a Friday.

Turntable, rotary arm or ring

A turntable wrapper spins the pallet while a film carriage travels up and down a mast. It is the straightforward choice for stable, evenly stacked loads. A rotary arm wrapper leaves the load still and carries the film around it on an arm, which is what you want for loads that are unstable, very light, or overhanging the pallet, and for loads too heavy to spin comfortably. A ring wrapper runs the film carriage around a fixed ring and is the high throughput option for inline wrapping. The load decides the machine, not the other way round.

Semi-automatic and fully automatic

On a semi-automatic machine an operator attaches the film tail, starts the cycle and cuts the film at the end. It suits medium volumes where a forklift is already presenting the pallet. A fully automatic machine clamps, cuts and wipes the film down itself, so pallets can arrive and leave on a conveyor with nobody at the machine. That is the point at which wrapping stops being a separate task and becomes part of the line.

Pre-stretch and film cost

Powered pre-stretch draws the film between two rollers turning at different speeds before it reaches the load, so each metre off the roll covers more pallet. It is the single biggest lever on film cost per pallet, and it is also what lets you apply real containment force without tearing the film or crushing the corners of a carton. Film force is set per recipe rather than by feel, so the same load gets the same wrap every time.

Wrap patterns and load protection

Reinforcement wraps at the base tie the load to the pallet, extra top wraps hold the top courses on, and a top sheet dispenser covers the load against dust and moisture where it will be stored outside or under a leaking roof. Roping the film into a cable through part of the cycle adds holding force where a load needs it without adding film everywhere.

Fitting into the line

A fully automatic wrapper needs pallets delivered squarely and taken away promptly, so infeed and outfeed conveyors, pallet centring and the control handshake matter as much as the wrapper. Where the pallet also has to be strapped, pallet strappers handle that, and orbital wrappers cover long or awkward products that are wrapped through a ring rather than on a pallet. Where the pallet is being built as well as wrapped, that is palletising.

Safety and siting

Guarding, e-stops and interlocks are designed around the moving arm or turntable and the film carriage, and the machine needs space for the forklift approach as well as its own footprint. Turntable or rotary arm?

Turntable suits stable, evenly stacked loads. Rotary arm suits unstable, very light, overhanging or heavy loads, because the load stays still.

What does pre-stretch actually save?

Powered pre-stretch thins the film before it reaches the load, so each metre off the roll covers more pallet. It is the main lever on film cost per pallet.

Semi-automatic or fully automatic?

Semi-automatic suits medium volumes where a forklift already presents the pallet. Fully automatic clamps, cuts and wipes the film itself for conveyor fed lines.

Can it be integrated with conveyors?

Yes. Fully automatic machines run inline with infeed and outfeed conveyors, pallet centring and a PLC handshake with the rest of the line.

How do you stop the top of the load coming off?

Can we cover the load against dust and rain?

A top sheet dispenser lays a sheet over the load before the top wraps, for pallets stored outside or in damp areas.

What load information do you need to quote?

Load dimensions and weight, how stable the stack is, pallets per hour, and whether the pallet arrives by forklift or on a conveyor.

What maintenance is involved?

Routine checks on the film carriage rollers, drive and sensors, plus keeping the turntable or arm path clear. Film roll changeover is the main daily task.

Is guarding included?

Guarding, e-stops and interlocks are designed around the moving arm or turntable and the film carriage on a risk basis.

Do you supply the stretch film as well?
